Sooooo...

Are our heroes heartthrobs or heartbreakers? What's the fascination with a man who sometimes acts as a jerk? My theory is that we love heartthrobs who are sometimes heartbreakers because ... they have a chance to make things right! What a thrill that is--the "make up" chemistry fairly sizzles between two lovers after the storm. A man gets to redeem himself in some totally delicious ways and becomes the irresistible hero once more!

Adrian Segrave is an honorable man in An Eternity of Roses, yet he has moments when he can't help but fall victim to the darkness inside him.

The following scene broke my heart to write. Something very bad has happened to rock the balance between Adrian and Emma, and it seems like there's no way out...

---Beginning of excerpt---

“I don’t want to see you again,” he said quietly. He refused to process what she’d just told him, choosing instead to voice the first words that made it to his lips.
“If you just hear me out—” she pleaded.
He gave her a quelling glance. “We’re done here. If you have any sense of self-preservation, you would just leave now.”
Adrian, I love you,” she called to him, her face soaked with fresh tears.
Shocked, he stepped back abruptly, as through she’d shot him point blank. She’d said that name—a name only the woman in his dreams knew. The dark, beautiful vision he cherished.
A coincidence?
I love you.
AdrianThat name.
She had no right to say that. No right to say she loved him, to call him what he wasn’t. Anyway, in case she meant it, the man she loved wasn’t the man he was. That man had died long ago.
She reached her hand out to him, and kicked his reflexes to take another step back, beyond her grasp.
“Don’t touch me,” he bit out between gritted teeth.
He turned his back to her, ignored her pleas, locked his heart to the sight of her pitiful form wracked with sobs. All the while, hoping he’d one day be able to blot out the acute anguish he just saw in her eyes.
“Go,” he demanded again.
She obeyed him this time. Her boots barely made a sound on the mown glass as swift footsteps took her away. Out of his life.

---End of Excerpt---

It didn't take long for Adrian to realize what a jerk he'd been and that his was an instinctive reaction spurred by negative past experiences. By then, the sh*t hit the fan though, and things wouldn't be as easy as rushing to apologize to Emma. For the heroine was facing some serious danger...

What happens to you when something has you at the end of your tether? I know I've said some very unreasonable things in the throes of anger--things that made me cringe afterwards. Adrian has a weakness--he doesn't suffer liars and he has good reason to. His reaction is extreme and out of character, but after one goes through what Adrian has gone through, we can eventually forgive him for saying such cruel things, right? LOL. True, his actions and words make him a heartbreaker, but no matter what, one has to stay true not just to the character, but to the psychology of what happens to a person when they're thrown in challenging situations. You've used that phrase, "I don't know what got into me" at some point in your lives. Come on, I know you did! :). I enjoy that part of making a character real and flawed and "not perfect". Because a hero is not always a hero--thank goodness! Most of all, I enjoyed imagining and devising how Adrian and Emma will go about claiming their bliss after letting these troubled waters move under the bridge and away from their lives.

I look forward to featuring Emma and Adrian again in book 2 of The Valthreans series--A Lifetime for Revenge--due out in the summer.
