Sooooo...

Are our heroes heartthrobs or heartbreakers? What's the fascination with a man who sometimes acts as a jerk? My theory is that we love heartthrobs who are sometimes heartbreakers because ... they have a chance to make things right! What a thrill that is--the "make up" chemistry fairly sizzles between two lovers after the storm. A man gets to redeem himself in some totally delicious ways and becomes the irresistible hero once more!

Adrian Segrave is an honorable man in An Eternity of Roses, yet he has moments when he can't help but fall victim to the darkness inside him.

The following scene broke my heart to write. Something very bad has happened to rock the balance between Adrian and Emma, and it seems like there's no way out...

---Beginning of excerpt---

“I don’t want to see you again,” he said quietly. He refused to process what she’d just told him, choosing instead to voice the first words that made it to his lips.
“If you just hear me out—” she pleaded.
He gave her a quelling glance. “We’re done here. If you have any sense of self-preservation, you would just leave now.”
Adrian, I love you,” she called to him, her face soaked with fresh tears.
Shocked, he stepped back abruptly, as through she’d shot him point blank. She’d said that name—a name only the woman in his dreams knew. The dark, beautiful vision he cherished.
A coincidence?
I love you.
AdrianThat name.
She had no right to say that. No right to say she loved him, to call him what he wasn’t. Anyway, in case she meant it, the man she loved wasn’t the man he was. That man had died long ago.
She reached her hand out to him, and kicked his reflexes to take another step back, beyond her grasp.
“Don’t touch me,” he bit out between gritted teeth.
He turned his back to her, ignored her pleas, locked his heart to the sight of her pitiful form wracked with sobs. All the while, hoping he’d one day be able to blot out the acute anguish he just saw in her eyes.
“Go,” he demanded again.
She obeyed him this time. Her boots barely made a sound on the mown glass as swift footsteps took her away. Out of his life.

---End of Excerpt---

It didn't take long for Adrian to realize what a jerk he'd been and that his was an instinctive reaction spurred by negative past experiences. By then, the sh*t hit the fan though, and things wouldn't be as easy as rushing to apologize to Emma. For the heroine was facing some serious danger...

What happens to you when something has you at the end of your tether? I know I've said some very unreasonable things in the throes of anger--things that made me cringe afterwards. Adrian has a weakness--he doesn't suffer liars and he has good reason to. His reaction is extreme and out of character, but after one goes through what Adrian has gone through, we can eventually forgive him for saying such cruel things, right? LOL. True, his actions and words make him a heartbreaker, but no matter what, one has to stay true not just to the character, but to the psychology of what happens to a person when they're thrown in challenging situations. You've used that phrase, "I don't know what got into me" at some point in your lives. Come on, I know you did! :). I enjoy that part of making a character real and flawed and "not perfect". Because a hero is not always a hero--thank goodness! Most of all, I enjoyed imagining and devising how Adrian and Emma will go about claiming their bliss after letting these troubled waters move under the bridge and away from their lives.

I look forward to featuring Emma and Adrian again in book 2 of The Valthreans series--A Lifetime for Revenge--due out in the summer.

We all want to love a Heartbreaker. Maybe its because of his chiseled good looks, his bad boy attitude, or the mysterious nature of him. Some Heartbreakers are just that, they know what they got and how to use it to get what they want. Then there are those Heartbreakers that don’t even realize that they are doing it. The best part about a Heartbreaker is that there is always a woman that turns their world upside down until they realize it is love. I have read many Romance Novels over the years and have run into many memorable Heartbreakers and my favorites are usually the ones that don’t even know they are Heartbreakers! Some of my personal favorite Heartbreakers are :

Kade Jamenson (Werewolf) from An Alpha’s Path. Kade is a sexy werewolf that will make you burn but a mishap with a potential mate makes him not think he will find love.

Ian MacPhie (Vampire) from All I Want For Christmas is a Vampire. Ian is a heartbreaking Highland Vampire that was frozen in his immortality when he was only 15. With the help of his friend he is given a drug that helps him age to 28 so he could look like a man instead of a child after hundreds of years. He has no idea that he looks of a warrior and the lover.

Lothaire Daciano (Vampire) from Lothaire. Lothaire is definitely a heartbreaker and his cocky attitude proves it! Thinks he’s a gift to women! Its just the sucker punch from a woman he doesn’t realize is his equal that brings him down a notch.

Marius Parker from His Contrary Bride. Marius is every part the gentlemen but doesn’t realize he could also easily be the rogue!

Benjamin Gateway from To Win His Wayward Wife. Benjamin doesn’t realize that he is a heartbreaker because the one woman he loved, he lost….or did he?

Fury North (Human with Canine DNA) from Fury and Valiant North (Human with Feline DNA) from Valiant. Fury and Valiant are strong New Species and gorgeous to boot, but because they are damaged they doesn’t think they can hold onto to the women they love.

Sigimor Cameron from Highland Conqueror. Sigimor is every bit the Highland Laird and warrior but can he hold onto to the beautiful English lady?

Joshua Striker (Werewolf) from Alexandra’s Legacy. Joshua is a scared and battle hard enforcer for his pack and he thinks that he doesn’t have what it takes to make the women melt.

A hero can break my heart when he gives all of himself to a woman while fighting it tooth and nail. Fighting himself for control and then finally releasing it. Mm...heartbreakin' heros!

Great novel! Added to my to-read list. :)

I don't really know what it is about heartbreakers that draws me to them. Maybe it's the foolish otptimist in me that makes me hope that maybe I will be the one to "tame" them.

I love all about them , especially when you know deep down they want to be loved or at least some of them do. They just been hurt in the past and they rather hurt others or guard their own heart to prevent it again.

I'm not much for Facebook. I'm also not big on heartbreakers in real life. In books, I think we want to see a woman (or a man) get past the heartbreak to their HEA.

My favorite part of having a heart breaker is the world class groveling. Todd in Lauren Dane's Laid Bare is my perfect example.

To me a heartbreaker is someone who doesn't know how good and special he really is underneath that “Bad Boy” persona. When he falls in love, he falls hard. He is the guy that doesn't realize that his actions have broken your heart....But, when he does realize it, he takes immediate action to correct the misunderstanding and convince you he really does love you and no one else!
My favorite heartbreaker is Smitty from the book "The Beast in Him" by Shelly Laurenston. (One of the Pack/Pride series books) He was just drop dead gorgeous and sexy and he broke Jessie Ann's heart when he wouldn't claim her with "the Smith Mate Maul" If you want to know what the heck I'm talking about.......READ THE BOOK. :) In fact I recommend you read the series.
Thanks for being part of the hop and for the chance to win. <^_^>

I think it is for me anyway, they make you feel special and the rules of a heartbreaker don't apply to you. And then its's to late. My favorite heartbreaker is the one that your heart can’t live without. One of my best is Lucas from D B Reynolds book “Lucas” (Vampire in America series). Strong mind, well put together and tender when he needs to be.

I don't know that I've met a heart breaker, but I've read about quite a few. My current favorites are both Lauren Dane characters. One is Shane from Fated and the other Todd from Laid Bare. I think the redeeming thing about them is that when they realize how wrong they are they are quite good at communicating their understanding and groveling.
